The following is a fast paced, cased based, and high energy presentation that reviews the management of thrombocytopenia in hospitalized patients. Lecture includes review of multiple etiologies (including life threatening) of thrombocytopenia and their work up and management. Presentation covers ITP, DIC, TTP, HIT, and other common causes of thrombocytopenia. Presentation is evidence based and relies heavily on audience polling to drive home key concepts and maintains audience engaged throughout.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
- Review evaluation of thrombocytopenia in hospitalized patients
- Perform workup and differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia
- Review evidence-based recommendations on treatment of DIC, TTP, HIT, ITP, among others.

Andrew Herber
Andy Herber has worked as a PA at Mayo Clinic in the Division of Hospital Medicine for 17 years. In addition to seeing patients, Andy serves as the Chair of the NPPA Education for the institution. He is a course director of three NPPA Hospital Medicine CME courses and is a well known national speaker. He is faculty at the Mayo Clinic Simulation Center as well as lectures to local PA and NP programs. Andy is an active preceptor of PA students and has received multiple education awards in his career.
